Chariots of Fire

The memorable opening sequence of the 1981 movie was filmed on the West Sands, a spectacular beach that runs the whole length of the links.  Runners, as in the film, still use this beach but now share it with stunning traction kites – lightweight carts powered by kites (www.standrewstractionkites.co.uk).

The East Sands, close to the picturesque harbour, is more of a traditional seaside beach.  Between the two are the Castle Sands, over which the walls of the Castle still loom.
